jenny deller: writer/director/producer > statement > work

Jenny got her start as a director in the DIY arts scene in Portland, Oregon, where her studies in acting, writing, and directing culminated in a one-woman show she wrote and performed based on jazz singer Anita O'Day. Soon after, her 16mm burlesque short, The Interview, screened at both the Egg Fest and Open Cine in New York. Before leaving the Northwest, she wrote and directed The 7Up View, a video valentine to Portland's neon lights. Jenny went on to study acting at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, and soon moved to New York where her acting training ran the gamut from pantomime to Meisner. Her New York credits include a Russian firebrand on Law & Order, Juliet in Romeo & Juliet, and cover girl for Philip Morris' Quit Assist campaign. During her five years in New York, she also produced and directed two more shorts, including a video adaptation of Marguerite Duras' Savannah Bay, and wrote numerous short stories, a feature-length screenplay, and monologues for the stage based on Barbara Sonneborn's documentary Regret to Inform. In 2004, Jenny moved to Philadelphia to live with her partner and develop her first feature. She is the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and has published writing in Cineaste and Plazm magazines. She brings her knowledge of Internet Marketing to the production from her position as Senior Copywriter for women's retailer Anthropologie.
